Art Club Portfolio Requirements

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Art Club is a great outlet of creativity for the students at Westwood. It is based not only on the academia, but also on self-expression, building community and a strong desire to take part in enriching their learning environment. Projects for the Art Club include but are not limited to: hallway projects involving the design and decoration of spaces in need, helping to display student work, and the making of art related signs, posters and banners. This year the focus will be environmental art. As a member, students will receive greater in-depth training further developing their personal skills and artistic abilities.
The Art Club will not only benefit the students involved by providing community and space for creativity, but the entire student population will see results. The school will be visually enhanced because of the time, cooperation and dedication of those participating in Art Club.

Portfolio Requirements

Students wishing to be a part of art club must meet the following requirements: Student must hold and maintain a ‘C’ average or above with a ‘S’ or above in classroom conduct. In addition, each student must submit three images following the criteria below. Unfortunately, materials cannot be provided for these creative works. Images must be drawn on white or vanilla paper. Images can be colored, painted or shaded. Crumpled, torn or notebook paper will not be accepted. These images should best represent the students skills and dedication to the arts.

1.     The student will draw a landscape with a foreground ground, background and horizon line. (Suggestions: a city, neighborhood, forest, mountain range, valleys, a beach . . .)

2.     The student will draw a still life with at least three objects. Objects must be sitting on a surface, not ‘floating in the air’. (Suggestions: set up a bowl of fruit to draw, draw what is on the coffee table at home, place several cups or jars on a table and draw, make a ‘scene’ with your favorite toys to draw. Pay attention to how objects overlap.)

3.     The student will make an image of their choice. Please DO NOT DRAW existing cartoon characters like sponge bob. (Suggestions: Make a collage by gluing magazine clippings together, draw a variety of lines, colors and shapes to create an abstract work of art, think about what is most important to you and draw it, make up your own super hero or comic book cover, draw a portrait of yourself or someone close to you.)

Please submit work no later than September 18th. The first art club meeting will be held Thursday, September 21st. Students accepted into art club will receive a permission slip prior to the first meeting.
